Industry Friends at Zenith Aircraft open house.

Builders,

This year is my 12th consecutive visit to the Zenith Aircraft factory open house. The event starts tomorrow, but late tonight, with all the prep work done, a number of industry people who will display products and services gathered at the Mexican restaurant and watering hole in town. It is a chance to catch up at dinner before the builders arrive

.

Above, some of the people who will display at the open house. A number of us have been in the game more than 20 years.

.

Although some of us offer competitive products, the truth is most of get along pretty well, We are not ‘ green’, and we respect each other, acknowledging determination, creativity and accomplishments.

Yes, we are using Ford Man’s choice of land vehicles, but both our planes have Chevy engines.

Something Tasteful about ‘Bigfoot’

Builders,

I stopped by our local NAPA today, (the setting of this story Feminism in Rural Florida, Pt. 2) to pick up some filters and carb cleaner, and was invited to dine with the staff in the employee break room. When I asked what was on the menu from Mother Nature’s supermarket, the response was ‘Bigfoot’.

.

.

Above, ‘Bigfoot’ the nickname for a particular 160 lb. wild hog with unusually large feet. It ceased being a member of the invasive species club when it met the NAPA store owners brother just north of I-10. A local establishment recycled Bigfoot into the sausage seen in the tray. Tasty, and free of the questionable chemicals which are pervasive in nearly all supermarket products. The tool was an AR chambered in 6.8SPC.  Other than the last one or two seconds, Bigfoot’s life was a paradise of freedom in a natural setting compared to the very unpleasant to contemplate existence of the animals who’s last destination was the local supermarket.

2018 Oshkosh photos, (1)

Builders,

Above, is picture I took the night before Oshkosh 2018 started.  It is Paul Salter’s Panther parked in my booth at sunset, 12 hours before the start. The image captures the moment, months of prep work with friends, and the last quiet hours before the start of the worlds largest airshow.

Feminism in Rural Florida, Pt. 2

Builders,

.

I just stopped by our local Napa auto parts store, which also something of a community social hub, and took the photo below, it is my friend Suzanne, who also appeared with a very large alligator in this longer story: Thought for the Day: Feminism in Rural Florida.

.

.

Suzanne at work, with a tool she will put to use on Saturday, the start of Florida crossbow season, it is delayed a week behind the start of traditional bow season. We are both the same age, but Suzanne is notably healthier, something she attributes to consuming no processed food and leading a low stress life. The link above speaks of her fieldcraft and perspectives. They are not considered unusual in our rural community where terms like ‘self reliance’ have physically observable expressions, it isn’t just a platitude bantered about.

Chouinard Pietenpol on final

Builders,

Many people in the Corvair world have met Mark Chouinard, he is a 6’5″ gentle giant,  ( I say this aware of the comments on his FB page from his old infantry friends who offer great testimonials to his skills with belt-fed weapons ) who has attended a number of Colleges including #32  where his engine ran in a freezing rain storm, there is a great photo of it here:  Last Call, Corvair College #40, Texas Sept. 31-Oct. 2..

.

Mark Shared the pictures below of his airplane as it is approaching completion. For a reminder of who Mark is, take a look at the photo in this link: Outlook 2016 – New Email address for Corvair Communications. It is Mark and myself at Oshkosh 5 years ago. If you look closely, you can see the dog sleeping in the trailer.

.

Many enjoyable days lay in the future of this plane. It is a reward that only traditional homebuilders will know. Your choice to be the master of both your airframe and your engine sets you apart from the major of homebuilders who approach building as a consumer experience. Their life, their choice, Your life, your choice.
