Bob Helt, one of the most respected and prolific historians and writers in the world of land based Corvairs, came to Corvair College #37 in Chino California last year, to capture the story of what we flying Corvair fans are up to, with the intention of getting this published in the national Corvair Society of America (CORSA) magazine. His goal was to build a bridge between the two communities, giving the land based people a look at our efforts.

This magazine has been published for 45 years, and it is a look into how fan’s of the Corvair cars are devoted to the history, engineering restoration and driving of the vehicles. A look into the article, which has a very favorable slant on our activities. The next time you are out shopping for a core engine, the person selling it to you probably will have a much more friendly attitude based on the effort Bob has made to get this story covered, written and published.
I enjoyed meeting Bob at CC#37. I am honored that a picture of my engine on the stand made it into the article. It is an early 64 Duck Billed Platypus case and has no cast webbing supports at the front of #5 cylinder but has cast internal relief spaces fro the 8409 crank.
As a result of your piece William, I joined CORSA yesterday for three reasons. First, because of your piece (duh!), second, because we had two Corvairs, a 63′ convertible and a 64″ 140 coupe, when I was in high school and third to support another organization that recognizes and perpetuates the car and its’ unique and versatile engine. I remember one night being the “victim” of the dreaded “Ralph Nader unsafe at any speed” end swapping maneuver in the convertible when I lifted off the gas in an overly aggressive mid-corner. Yep, it swapped ends immediately, just like any swing axle suspension would, including Porsches of the day. I should have just kept my foot on the gas and continued. Clearly Ralph never owned a Porsche.
